What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a polyphenol and a protective compound found and produced in the skin of red grapes, certain berries and other plants. It is produced by plants in response to environmental stresses such as mold, UV radiation and drought.Studies have demonstrated that resveratrol has antioxidant properties that protect cell membranes.
Resveratrol is found in the stems, leaves and skins of grapes. Red wine has about 1.5 to 3 milligrams of resveratrol per liter, and resveratrol is often referenced as "red wine polyphenols," "red wine extract" and similar names.
Resveratrol is also present in purple grape juice, red or purple grapes and peanuts. However, because of the fermenting process, resveratrol levels are higher in red wine than other natural sources — red wine has about three times as much resveratrol as grape juice.
Most resveratrol supplements available today are derived from the root of the Polygonum cuspidatum plant, otherwise known as Japanese Knotweed. This ubiquitous plant has a high concentration of naturally occurring resveratrol which makes it an ideal source for extraction.
Health Benefits of Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant, providing nutritional support for a healthy cardiovascular system.Resveratrol has been shown to improve longevity in yeast and several species of animals. It does this by activating a gene called Sirtuin1 or SIRT1. It is not yet known whether resveratrol has the same effect in humans.
Purity and Concentration of Resveratrol
This natural grade resveratrol is a powdered extraction from the Polygonum cuspidatum plant root that has been standardized to contain 98% trans-resveratrol. It contains no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents.Suggested Use of Resveratrol
The suggested serving size for trans-resveratrol is 500 milligrams per day. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for resveratrol here. To increase bioavailability of the powder consider taking it with meals.Resveratrol supplements work best when combined with grape extracts or other antioxidants.
Potential Side Effects of Resveratrol
Warning: Do not use resveratrol if you have Hepatitis C or if you are taking antiviral medication. Those with hormone-sensitive cancers or using antiplatelet medications should also avoid resveratrol supplements.Resveratrol 98% is safe at suggested serving sizes. Adverse effects, in rare occasions, include stomach cramps and diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite and numbness in the limbs. These side effects are usually only seen with use of lower grade resveratrol supplements which contain emodin, a constituent of Japanese Knotweed that is used for its laxative effect. Emodin content of resveratrol is highly undesirable but removing emodin from Japanese knotweed can be extremely expensive. The highly refined resveratrol that we sell, Resveratrol 98%, can be 4 to 5 times more expensive than the typical 50% resveratrol products containing emodin with which you might be comparing our product.
Children, pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding should not use the product. People suffering from serious medical conditions should discuss taking resveratrol with a health care professional.
People using medications that are metabolized via the cytochrome P450 pathway should not take resveratrol.
Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Resveratrol
Resveratrol powder is very slightly soluble in water (in an ethanol and water solution resveratrol is soluble only to about 50 mg per liter at 20° celsius). This 98% resveratrol product has almost no taste and is very easy to take orally with food. Fatty meals improve absorption.References & Further Research
