What is Octacosanol?
Octacosanol is a solid, waxy and insoluble compound that is a member of the fatty alcohol family. It is the primary component of this sugar cane extract called polycosanol.Octocosanol is also the active ingredient in wheat germ oil, isolated from the wax usually found on the green blades of wheat.
Octacosanol is one of the best available sources of Vitamin E. Wheat germ oil is very rich in vitamin E and is used frequently for both internal use or for external application to aid healing of skin problems.
Octacosanol improves oxygen utilization, which in turn improves physical performance, particularly at higher altitudes or when under stress.
Wheat germ itself has a rich supply of protein, B vitamins, vitamin E and many minerals, particularly iron, calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, phosphorus, and potassium.
Nutritionally it is more balanced than its isolated oil because the latter is almost exclusively vitamin E plus other oils and thus more caloric. But our bodies need some of the oils for tissue health and to obtain natural vitamin E, so wheat germ oil supplements can be a good addition to a low-fat or low-vitamin-E diet.
Benefits of Octacosanol
Octacosanol, or wheat germ oil, is a very good source of nutrients, vitamins, essential fatty acids and minerals. Linoleic acid is also present in wheat germ oil. It is responsible for providing precursors for omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids, which have benefits that include supporting a healthy heart. The transference of fatty acids it provides may boost energy supplied to the muscles, making it popular among strength athletes and those working to improve physical performance.
Purity and Concentration of Octacosanol
Octacosanol and polycosanol are long chain saturated fatty acids derived from sugar cane wax. This pure bulk white powder contains at least 30% octacosanol and 99% polycosanol. It contains no fillers, additives or anti-caking agentsSuggested Use of Octacosanol
The suggested serving size for octacosanol is 10 milligrams taken once or twice daily, depending on individual needs or as directed by a physician. Because the serving size is so small, use a milligram scale to measure serving sizes. PureBulk sells several different types of scales.Potential Side Effects of Octacosanol
Octacosanol is safe at suggested serving sizes. It is not recommended for those taking levodopa. In addition, polycosanol may thin the blood and should be taken cautiously by those with bleeding disorders or those taking blood-thinning drugs. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing.Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Octacosanol
This pure bulk powder has a waxy feel and bitter taste. It is completely insoluble in water. Octacosanol is, however, readily soluble in hot ethyl alcohol and/or hot oils. Increased bioavailability and efficacy of octacosanol powder can be achieved if a serving is first dissolved in hot oil, such as virgin coconut oil. Octacosanol has a melting temperature of approximately 83° centigrade (181.4° Fahrenheit) and when placed in hot virgin coconut oil at a temperature slightly higher than 83°C (but not exceeding 90°C for safety considerations) it will dissolve quickly and completely into the oil after a minute or so of stirring. Once cooled the virgin coconut oil and octacosanol/polycosanol solution will form a semi-solid paste with high bioavailability and efficacy.References & Further Research
