What is L-Carnosine?
L-Carnosine is an amino acid that supports cell health by its inhibiting effect on two mechanisms: oxidation and glycosylation.Oxidation is the process by which oxygen is metabolized. As the oxygen "steals" electrons from other molecules, it creates free radical molecules which can damage tissues.
Glycosylation is the oxidation of proteins by sugar. It allows cross-linking of proteins and may cause a loss of cell function and genome integrity.
L-Carnosine limits lipid peroxidation and stabilizes cell membranes.
NOTE: Carnosine should not be confused with either L-Carnitine or Acetyl L-Carnitine, which are also amino acids. These supplements are NOT related in any way and serve entirely different purposes in the body.
Health Benefits of L-Carnosine
Carnosine is an amino acid with antioxidant properties that protects cells.Carnosine also helps block the accumulation of lactic acid, which causes the pain in muscles after periods of intense exercise. Carnosine taken before and after exercise can reduce lactic acid levels, aiding strength and high performance athletes.
Carnosine is a dipeptide molecule and an amino acid made naturally in the body from the covalent bonding of the amino acids histidine and alanine and by the enzyme carnosine synthetase. Carnosine is found in relatively high concentrations in several body tissues, including the skeletal muscle, skin, kidneys, stomach, heart muscle, nerve tissue and brain.
