What is Glucuronolactone (D-Glucuronolactone or DGL)?

Glucuronolactone is produced by the metabolism of glucose in the human liver. It is a popular ingredient in energy drinks and is one of the main ingredients in well-known brands such as Red Bull.

This nutritional supplement is also referred to as D-Glucuronolactone, DGL, D-Glucurono-3,6-Lactone, D-Glucoronic Acid, and Glucuronic Acid Lactone.

DGL became part of many stimulants and energy drinks after studies indicated glucuronolactone can reduce sleepiness and boost energy, improve alertness and speed reaction time. Taken in conjunction with caffeine and taurine, Austrian researchers found that glucuronolactone has positive effects upon human mental performance.

DGL is produced naturally in the human liver from glucose and regulates glycogen formation. Its immediate precursor is glucuronic acid. DGL is used to orally administer glucuronic acid in the management of collagen and joint health. Since glucuronic acid is one of the principle constituents of chondroitin sulfate, DGL is also believed by some researchers to support joint, tendon and ligament health.

DGL is directly involved in cleansing the liver through glucuronidation. It quickens and catalyzes the elimination of both endogenic and exogenic noxal (harmful substances).

As an ergogenic aid, glucuronolactone is beneficial in overall exercise performance and recovery.

Benefits of Glucuronolactone

Glucuronolactone boosts workout performance and improves alertness. It is present in many popular energy drinks such as Red Bull, Rockstar and Pollen Burst, as it is a precursor to taurine. Glucuronolactone is added because it has been shown to fight fatigue and promote a sense of well-being.

Purity and Concentration of Glucuronolactone

Purebulk's D-Glucuronolactone (DGL) powder contains no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents.

Potential Side Effects of Glucuronolactone

Glucuronolactone is a naturally-occurring substance in the human liver and is considered safe. However, due to it's glycogenic properties, persons with diabetes or a history of hypoglycemia should consult their physician before use.

Suggested Use of Glucuronolactone

The suggested serving size for glucuronolactone is 500 milligrams to 1000 milligrams daily, depending on individual needs. A typical energy drink contains 500 milligrams to 600 milligrams of the dietary supplement. As you can see from the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for glucuronolactone here, a serving size of 500 milligrams (mg) is about 1/8 rounded teaspoon. A serving size of 1000 milligrams (mg) would be about a rounded 1/4 teaspoon. It is best taken on an empty stomach before your usual exercise routine.

Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Glucuronolactone

Human studies suggest that glucuronolactone administered orally is rapidly absorbed, metabolized and excreted in the form of glucaric acid. It dissolves quickly in water and has a slightly bitter and slightly sweet taste. Mix with a citrus-flavored drink to mask any bitterness.

Glucuronolactone works well when combined with other nutritional supplements, especially caffeine and taurine. It can also be combined with products such as arginine and creatine to aid performance athletes and competitive powerlifters and bodybuilders.

How should I store it?
