What is Fish Oil (High Omega 3) EPA/DHA?
Researchers first learned of the health benefits of essential fatty acids while studying the Inuit people of Greenland. The Inuits consume a high-fat diet yet rarely suffer from maladies such as heart disease. The solutions to this paradox are thought to be eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).Fish oil contains both health-promoting fatty acids. Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The omega-3 fatty acids are precursors to eicosanoids, signaling molecules that reduce inflammation in the body.
According to the American Heart Association, fish oil helps maintain cardiovascular health.
The dietary supplement is obtained from the tissues of oily fish such as mackerel, herring, tuna, halibut, salmon, cod liver, whale blubber, or seal blubber. Fish gather omega-3 fatty acids either by ingesting microalgae that synthesize these fatty acids (as is the case with herring and sardines) or by eating prey fish that have eaten microalgae. Fish oil supplements often contain small amounts of vitamin E (tocopherols) to prevent spoilage.
While several vegetable sources like flaxseed oil, soybean oil and walnuts contain omega-3, it is in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The body must first convert ALA into EPA and DHA, which brings only a limited health benefit. It is compromised by the consumption of saturated fats and trans fats. Additionally, the body becomes less efficient at converting ALA into EPA and DHA as a person ages.
The body does not produce its own omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-3 from vegetable sources is not bioavailable. Fish oil supplementation provides a bioavailable form of omega-3 fatty acids.
