What is DL-Methionine?

DL-methionine is a combination of the natural form of L-methionine and its optical isomer, D-methionine. It is an essential amino acid required by the body to synthesize S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe).

It is less bioavailable than L-methionine alone but is also less expensive to manufacture and thus costs less to purchase.

Amino acids are of paramount importance for human metabolism, ensuring that metabolic processes occur properly for good health. Most neurotransmitters and 95 percent of hormones in the body are made up of amino acids.

The body integrates DL-methionine with adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which in turn produces SAMe. SAMe is active and required in 40 biochemical processes and involved indirectly in many more.

The body requires methionine to produce two other sulfur-containing amino acids, cysteine and taurine, which enhance the body's natural ability to eliminate toxins, build healthy tissues and support cardiovascular health.

The body utilizes sulfur to develop hair follicles and maintain healthy skin and nails. Sulfur improves the production of lecithin in the liver, protecting the kidneys and helping the body dispose of heavy metals.

Methionine is a lipotropic, a chemical agent that assists the liver in processing fats (lipids) more efficiently. Other lipotropics include choline, inositol, and betaine (trimethylglycine or TMG), all of which help ensure normal liver function. Methionine also supports glutathione production, and glutathione in turn neutralizes toxins in the liver.

Methionine is one of three amino acids the body needs to manufacture creatine, used for energy production and muscle building.

Creatine is a nutrient naturally found in muscle tissue that provides the energy muscles need to move. It has been found to boost athletic performance during short, intense workouts. Creatine is necessary for muscular function and supports the heart and circulatory system.

High levels of methionine can be found in sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, fish, eggs, beans, garlic, lentils, yogurt, onions, meats and some other plant seeds.

Health Benefits of Methionine

Methionine improves the body’s ability to synthesize muscle protein. It is a source of sulfur required for the synthesis of other substances important for energy production like choline, creatine and carnitine.

It assists in the breakdown of fats, supports the digestive system and helps eliminate heavy metals from the body.

Methionine levels help determine and regulate the liver's concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, while SAMe supports liver function.

Purity and Concentration of Methionine

This DL-methionine contains no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents.

Potential Side Effects of Methionine

Methionine is safe at suggested serving sizes. Excessive use may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and irritability. This product is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing.

Suggested Use of Methionine

The suggested serving size for DL-Methionine is 1000 milligrams taken one or two times daily, depending on individual needs or as directed by a physician. A 3/8 teaspoon will yield the desired amount. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for DL Methionine here. Those taking a methionine supplement should balance it with choline and inositol.

Mixing and Solubility of Methionine

DL-methionine has a somewhat mild sweet-and-sour flavor. It dissolves quickly in hot water, but will not dissolve readily in cold water. Mix with hot water and a sweetener and drink.

How should I store it?

You will receive a resealable bag of this powder. Store in a cool, dry area protected from light. Reseal after each use.
