What is Malic Acid?

Malic acid is a natural substance found in fruits and vegetables. It is often called "apple acid" because of its high content in that fruit.

Also called malate, malic acid is an intermediate product of the Krebs cycle, which produces cellular energy in the form of ATP, the body's primary energy source.

Malic acid is naturally present in the body's cells. Health-related benefits include support for the immune system, oral health, reduced build-up of toxic metals and skin-care uses.

Malic acid is added to cosmetic formulations such as facial creams and peels to help keep a balanced skin tone as well as to adjust the pH of the product. Malic acid is commonly used by manufacturers of mouthwash and toothpaste. It is used in skin care products as an exfoliant.

Malic acid is sometimes added to processed foods to adjust the pH balance. It is also used to acidify wines, acid drinks, fruit juice, soda water and various soft drinks.

When added to food products malic acid provides the tartness in so-called "extreme candy" like Mega Warheads® or Sour Punch®. It is also present in sour sweets such as Jolly Ranchers®, Sweet Tarts® and various brands of salt & vinegar flavored potato chips.

As a dietary supplement, malic acid can be used as a standalone supplement. Some people prefer to use it in combination with D-ribose and magnesium.

Many athletes consume malic acid combined with creatine in the form of Dicreatine Malate to increase the delivery of oxygen to muscle cells.

Health Benefits of Malic Acid

One of malic acid’s most significant benefits lies in its ability to support energy production.

Athletes and bodybuilders interested in physical performance may want to consider malic acid supplementation.

Malic acid aids in the maintenance of proper oral hygiene. It stimulates the mouth to produce saliva, which in turn encourages healthy bacteria populations circulating in the mouth, teeth and gums.

Purity and Concentration of Malic Acid

This food-grade nutritional supplement (also commonly referred to as sour salt) contains no fillers, taste additives or anti-caking agents.

Malic acid is an asymmetrical molecule that exists in two forms. The L (levorotatory) molecule rotates to the left. It is the natural form of malic acid that occurs in foods and is more readily absorbed in the body. The D (dextrorotatory) molecule rotates to the right and is typically a synthetic form that is not as readily absorbed.

This product is DL-malic acid, a combination of the natural and synthetic forms of malic acid. It is less expensive than L-Malic Acid, the more bioavailable form.

Suggested Use of Malic Acid

The suggested serving size for malic acid is 500 milligrams taken two or three times a day, depending on individual needs. A level 1/8 teaspoon will yield the desired amount. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for Malic Acid here. Taking magnesium citrate with malic acid seems to enhance its benefits.

Potential Side Effects of Malic Acid

Malic acid is considered safe at recommended serving sizes. It is not recommended for use by pregnant and lactating women and children under 10 years of age unless recommended by a physician.

Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Malic Acid
