What is Coral Calcium (Okinawa)?

Coral calcium originates from coral colonies found in marine waters. Coral calcium, like other calcium sources such as oyster shells or limestone rock, is primarily calcium carbonate with trace amounts of magnesium and many other minerals.

Purebulk's coral calcium originates from Okinawa, Japan. Coral calcium sale is carefully controlled by the Japanese government, and the majority of their exported products come from fossilized coral sources rather than living coral reefs.

Calcium supplements are available in various compounds -- calcium citrate, calcium carbonate, calcium gluconate, and calcium pyruvate. Each compound contains a different amount of elemental calcium. Calcium carbonate is 40 percent calcium, calcium citrate is 24 percent calcium and coral calcium is 35 percent calcium. However, the absorption rate of the calcium also differs for each compound. Calcium content alone is not the only factor in selecting a calcium supplement. Coral calcium, naturally high in magnesium and other trace minerals, is readily available for the body to absorb.

Benefits of Coral Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and is vital to proper physical function. Having the right amount of calcium is needed for building and maintaining strong bones. The body will actually take calcium from bones if there are low calcium levels. Cellular functioning, blood clotting, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission and healthy teeth formation are all affected by calcium levels in the body. Calcium can also bind to other minerals and assist in eliminating them from the body.

Calcium naturally exists in many foods, including dairy products, seaweed, quinoa, beans and nuts. Some people suffer from a disorder known as hypocalcemia, a calcium deficiency in the blood. The most common cause of hypocalcemia is vitamin D deficiency, due to poor diet or lack of exposure to the sun. This is because adequate amounts of vitamin D are required for proper absorption of calcium.

Purity and Concentration of Coral Calcium

Potential Side Effects of Coral Calcium

WARNING: Persons with allergies to shellfish should not take this product.
Minor gastrointestinal side effects, headaches, irregular heartbeat and increased urination may occur from taking excessive amounts of calcium. Calcium in excess of 2.5 grams daily can cause mineral imbalances of zinc or iron.

Calcium supplements are not advisable for people with medical conditions that affect the body's ability to regulate calcium absorption and excretion. It should not be used by those who have parathyroid gland disease, or if antacids or other calcium supplements are already present. Calcium supplements may negatively affect the absorption of the antibiotic tetracycline.

Suggested Use of Coral Calcium

As a dietary supplement, take 1300 milligrams (a scant 1/2 tsp) once or twice daily, or as directed by physician. Individual needs may vary. You can see the volumetric measures chart for Coral Calcium here.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends a daily intake of 1000 milligrams of calcium for adults. Keep in mind, this refers to overall calcium intake from food and supplement sources. Because coral calcium is approximately 35 percent elemental calcium, a serving of 1300 milligrams will yield 455 milligrams of elemental calcium or 46% of the recommended daily value.

Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Coral Calcium

In order to be used properly by the body, calcium should be taken with magnesium.

Magnesium assists in the formation of bone and teeth, and aids the absorption of calcium, potassium and vitamin D.
