What is Calcium Lactate Gluconate?
Calcium lactate gluconate (also known as CLG, GLOCAL or calcium gluconolactate) is a soluble salt of calcium, lactic acid and gluconic acid that is 13 percent elemental calcium. First developed by Sandoz (a generic drug company that is a subsidiary of Novartis), calcium lactate gluconate is now a popular dietary supplement due to its excellent solubility and neutral taste.Calcium lactate gluconate was developed as a high-quality calcium source used to enrich food and beverage products.
Calcium supplements exist in different compounds -- calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, and calcium pyruvate.
Although all of these provide calcium, their compound value depends on different factors like calcium concentrations and absorption capabilities. Calcium carbonate is 40 percent calcium, calcium citrate is 21 percent calcium, and calcium gluconate is 9.3 percent calcium. Keep in mind the calcium content is only one factor. Bioavailability, or absorption rate, solubility, interactions with other medications or supplements, specific medical conditions of the individual, taste and cost are other factors to consider when selecting a calcium product.
Studies suggest calcium lactate gluconate bioavailability in humans can reach 30 percent, equal or even superior to the calcium bioavailability of milk. The calcium absorption rates from highly absorbable soluble calcium salts and from milk ranges between 25 percent and 33 percent in healthy individuals.
Benefits of Calcium Lactate Gluconate
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. It is of paramount importance for proper function. Adequate calcium is crucial for building and maintaining strong bones. The body will actually take the mineral from bones if there are low calcium levels in the blood. Cellular functioning, blood clotting, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission and healthy teeth formation are all affected by calcium levels in the body. Calcium can also bind to other minerals (such as phosphate) and assist in eliminating them from the body. Calcium naturally exists in many foods including dairy products, seaweed, quinoa, beans and nuts. Some people suffer from a disorder known as hypocalcemia, a calcium deficiency in the blood. The most common cause of hypocalcemia is vitamin D deficiency, due to poor diet or lack of exposure to the sun. This is because adequate amounts of vitamin D are required for proper absorption of calcium.
Calcium lactate gluconate can also be helpful in neutralizing hydrofluoric acid poisoning. It is ideal for the cooking technique of reverse spherification, while adding no flavor to the end product.
This nutritional supplement is generally used to prevent or treat abnormally low blood calcium levels in people who do not get sufficient calcium from their diets.
Many people use supplements to ensure they are getting enough calcium, especially pregnant, nursing or postmenopausal women and people taking certain medications like phenytoin, phenobarbital or prednisone (which obstruct calcium from reaching the muscle cells of the arteries and the heart). Calcium lactate gluconate aids in providing optimal levels of calcium to people taking these drugs.
Purity and Concentration of Calcium Lactate Gluconate
This pharmaceutical-grade calcium lactate gluconate is about 13 percent elemental calcium and contains no fillers, additives or anti-caking agents. You will receive a resealable bag of this powder. Store in a cool, dry area protected from light. Reseal after each use.Potential Side Effects of Calcium Lactate Gluconate
Calcium supplements are generally well tolerated. Minor gastrointestinal side effects, headaches, irregular heartbeat, and increased urination may occur from taking excessive amounts of calcium.Calcium supplements are not advisable for people with medical conditions that affect the body's ability to regulate calcium absorption and excretion.
Calcium lactate gluconate and calcium citrate are the two forms that bariatric patients can use since the calcium ionizes at a neutral pH.
Calcium supplements may negatively affect the absorption of the antibiotic tetracycline.
Suggested Use of Calcium Lactate Gluconate
While natural foods provide the best sources of calcium (one serving of a dairy product provides 300 mg of calcium), those who do not consume enough calcium from food sources may need to supplement their diet. The FDA recommends a Daily Value(DV) of 1000 mg calcium (for adults and children over 4 years of age).
The suggested serving size for calcium lactate gluconate is 1/2 tablespoon (~4300 milligrams) taken once or twice daily, preferably with meals. Since calcium lactate gluconate is about 13 percent elemental calcium, a 4300 mg serving will yield 550 milligrams of elemental calcium, or 55% of the recommended daily value.
Individual needs may vary. The FDA recommends the following Daily Intake Values of Calcium:.... ..For Infants: 600mg ..For Children Less than 4 years of age: 800 mg ..For Pregnant and Lactating Women: 1300 mg You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for calcium lactate gluconate here.
Bioavailability, Mixing and Solubility of Calcium Lactate Gluconate
Since this calcium source is highly bioavailable and easy to dissolve, it is perfect for adding to any food, drink, or recipe. It is also soluble in cold liquids, and can be used with acidic, high alcohol, or fatty mediums.References & Further Research
