What is 5-Hydroxytryptophan?
5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan (abbreviated as 5-HTP or 5 HTP) is a compound produced in the body from the amino acid tryptophan which is converted into serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. As a precursor of serotonin and the hormone melatonin, 5 HTP supports the central nervous system's synthesis of serotonin as the intermediate metabolite of L-tryptophan. Serotonin levels play a key role in the regulation of mood, appetite, sexual behavior and aggression.Suggested Use of 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)
Suggested serving sizes for 5-HTP powder generally range from 50 mg to 200 mg per day. If you are considering taking more than 200 mg per day talk to your physician or health care professional. For accurate use of this product use a milligram precision scale. Use the bulk density volumetric table only if you have calibrated measuring spoons. You can see the full bulk density/volumetric conversion chart for 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) here.Begin 5-HTP supplementation gradually with 50 mg per day. If well tolerated after 1 week of use, increase use to 100 mg per day and then gradually to 200 mg per day. This greatly reduces the risk of the mild nausea symptoms often experienced during the first few weeks of use. 5-HTP can be taken with food.
Potential Side Effects of 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)
5-HTP powder may cause mild gastrointestinal disturbances including nausea, heartburn, flatulence, feelings of fullness, and rumbling sensations in some people. Large amounts of 5-HTP may significantly increase serum levels of serotonin and could result in serotonin syndrome. Symptoms and signs of serotonin syndrome include confusion, agitation, diaphoresis, tachycardia, myoclonus and hyperreflexia. Occasional side effects from 5-HTP supplementation include gastric upset, hypomania (a mild form of mania characterized by hyperactivity and feelings of well-being) and euphoria. Additionally, individuals with Down syndrome should not take 5-HTP.CAUTION!: If you are currently taking, or within the last 90 days have taken, any anti-stress, anti-anxiety, or anti-depression medications DO NOT TAKE 5-HTP supplementation without talking to your prescribing physician first. 5-HTP should not be taken with antidepressants, weight-control drugs, other serotonin-modifying agents, or substances known to cause liver damage because these modify 5-HTP levels. Combining numerous supplements increases the risk of adverse side effects.
